Prince william and Kate Middleton have known each other for a long time, and have been dating each other for years. However, no matter how strong a relationship is, it is put under extra pressure in a situation like theirs. Media attention, the focus of being a royal, and his military career are all some of the factors that will influence their life as newlyweds. I have hope for them though, and sincerely wish them a long and happy marriage.
Here are three things that prince william and Kate Middleton can do to ensure that they have a successful marriage.
1. Remember their history.
William and Kate have known each other for their entire adult lives. They have encouraged each other as they have studied, volunteered with charities, and as William completed his military training. With all of the media frenzy surrounding their royal wedding, and the public attention that will be on them afterwards, they need to remember the foundation of their relationship. I find it romantic when my husband reminds me of things from early in our relationship, and remembering their relationship roots will help to strengthen William and Kate as well.
2. Respect his mother's memory, but forget about Princess Diana.
Since the announcement of the royal wedding, the comparisons between Kate Middleton and Princess Diana have been overwhelming. Princess Diana was William's mother, and so they should always respect her memory. I find it touching, for example, that he proposed to Kate with his mother's ring.
However, they also need to learn when to forget about Princess Diana. If Kate tries to be Diana, or if they take all of the comparisons seriously, they're doomed. William and Kate need to establish themselves as William and Kate. No, they don't have quite the fairy tale quality that Charles and Diana had. They seem more real, which makes them more relevant as royals today, and gives them a better chance at having a successful marriage.
